Intercooler Coolant Heat Exchanger for 2020-2024 GM LM2/LZ0

The GM 3.0L Duramax utilizes an air-to-liquid intercooler to keep its intake air cool. However, the stock intercooler’s performance is largely dependent on the efficiency of the front-mounted coolant heat exchanger. This heat exchanger absorbs heat from the intercooler coolant and dissipates it to the ambient air. If the heat exchanger becomes heat saturated, it will greatly impact the efficiency of the intercooler, and affect engine performance. Heat saturation can result from prolonged high-load operations such as towing, or extreme ambient temperatures.

PPE overcomes the heat saturation issue with our High-Efficiency Intercooler Coolant Heat Exchanger. It features a 20% larger core and more rows of fins compared to the stock unit, adding about one full quart of coolant to the system for improved efficiency and heat stamina. The fully brazed, 18.5 fins-per-inch core and all-aluminum end tanks further boost its heat dissipation effectiveness. We have also optimized the two-row coolant tube layout for better coolant flow distribution. The pressure drop across the PPE heat exchanger is 15% lower than the stock unit, resulting in a higher coolant flow rate and carrying away even more heat from the intake air.

The installation of the PPE Heat Exchanger is a breeze – no grille removal required. The stock mounting brackets are retained for a seamless fitment. This unit alone will enhance the performance of the stock air-to-liquid intercooler. However, when paired with the PPE Air-to-Water Intercooler Kit, the combination delivers unmatched cooling performance, increasing charge air density, and transforming your 3.0L Duramax into a powerhouse.

Meh.

I’m just not impressed at all. I mean, the install is simple enough. No grill removal, fairly quick in and out. Not a big deal. But there’s zero improvement here. I was already running the PPE charge air cooler and regularly saw ambient, or at most 10 degrees over ambient CAI2 temps even on long highway drives. Now I never see below 10 over ambient, and on highway drives it’s as much as 35 degrees over ambient. Stick with the stock radiator and just run the charge air cooler, this is a waste of time and money.
